‘Twisters’ spoiler free movie review | A must see summer blockbuster

In April, 1996 the United States experienced a tornado outbreak across a large area of eastern North America. 118 tornadoes over a 3-day period. On May 10, 1996, the natural disaster phenomenon, “Twister” was released, taking the world by storm – bringing with it a fascination over nature’s most violent storm. A fascination that has been sweeping the nation ever since. This summer unleashes the next chapter in the seat-gripping, action packed thrill ride with the “Twisters” movie.

The shocking opening sequence of the 1996 movie “Twister“, where the dad is sucked up into the tornado, has stuck with me more than any actual horror movie death I’ve ever seen. I grew up in a place where tornadoes were about as likely as pigs flying. You would think it wouldn’t be a problem then, right? Wrong. We had one tornado watch when I was a kid. Much to my parent’s dismay, I moved all my belongings into our basement until I was sure it was over. So, I went into this movie to see if this film would have as much of a lasting impact. To face my own fears. And of course, to be entertained. For all intents and pun purposes, “Twisters,” blew me away.

Twisters Movie Review acting

“Twisters” taking the cinema by storm

While not a sequel nor a remake this movie still pays homage to its predecessor with clever easter eggs and call back lines. However, they still create a story of their own. It does not get stuck trying to copy the original, though it still captures the same spirit. “Twisters” highly upped the ante from the original which is evident from the very first scene of the film. The stakes are higher than ever from the moment the story begins. The pacing lends itself to keeping viewers on the edge of their seat. Even the natural disasters are one upping themselves in intensity as the movie progresses – with so many storms it is no wonder they made the movie title plural.

“Heart pounding fear”

Full of intense heart pounding fear, but also an unexpected and well distributed amount of humor, “Twisters” creates a wonderful balance bringing you through a full spectrum of emotions and a well-rounded story. This movie provides an adrenaline kick that certainly doesn’t feel like you spent the last two hours sitting in a comfy recliner chair inside. It really makes you understand both the beauty and the rush of fear that calls to people who become storm chasers.

Twisters Movie Review cinematography

The visuals of the “Twisters” film

Anyone talking about this movie would be remiss not to mention the cinematography. Director of photography, Dan Mindel, also known for his work on “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, “Star Trek Into Darkness” and” The Amazing Spiderman 2″, creates stunning visuals with emphasis on the intensity of the action and understanding of the character’s emotions. Watching this movie made me want to visit Oklahoma to see its breathtaking depiction with my own eyes. It also made me want to avoid anywhere a tornado might be for the sheer terror and awe that I felt watching the twisters rip through towns and fields alike.

“The next major movie star in the making, Glen Powell”

Aside from the stellar writing, directing and cinematography within this film, a crucial part that helped everything come together was the undeniable chemistry between the two leads. Starring the sensational, Daisy Edgar-Jones and the next major movie star in the making, Glen Powell. Both deliver an intriguing, realistic and heartfelt performance that truly brings the main protagonists to life. The films added bits of “found” camcorder footage lends itself to an immersive feel that leaves you with no choice but to become attached to these characters – even ones with less run time. Every character portray so much depth and dimension. It made the world and the story set within it feel even more real. As if you too could be playing a part in the story, even if it is just as a bystander witnessing the disastrous events unfold.

If you feel it… chase it!

Folks, I have never even stepped foot in a state that has a real threat of looming twisters. Yet driving home from the theater with clear skies above me, I felt like I was driving straight towards a storm ready to tame my very own tornado. For both “Twister” fans and causal movie goers alike, this movie is the must-see summer blockbuster that you won’t want to miss. Trust me, it’s just a feeling. And if you feel it, chase it.
