Theme parks are a place of escape, filled with immersive lands, magical adventures and thrilling rides. They are also places with lots and lots of walking. For some, this is a good reason to bring out the “comfy shoes.” But, the Universal Run Club takes that a step further, literally, by encouraging fans to walk, jog and run through Orlando’s beautiful themed parks.
The Universal Run Club hosts weekly running and social events on property at Universal Orlando Resort. After the 5K/10K races at Universal stopped happening, the URC team decided to fill the need. They are offering a focus on community, exercise and mental health, with Florida’s iconic theme parks as the backdrop.
It is important to note, this is a fan made initiative and is not something currently operated by the Universal Orlando Resort. While there are running and walking paths around the Universal Orlando Resort, the company itself has not hosted a 5K in many years, although they did have a one day special walking event with Al Roker in 2022.
Weekly Universal Orlando 5k runs – for free*
For free needs to be specified. The Universal Run Club does not charge for their planning or meetups. But, as you are visiting a theme park space, the Universal Orlando Resort does have parking and admission fees. The weekly CityWalk runs only require you to pay the parking fee. But for those staying at Universal Orlando Resort hotels or for local Passholders, this parking fee is waived.
The Universal Run Club states, “Rise and shine for a 3.1 mile run around Universal Orlando Resort! Our welcoming and diverse community encourages all paces, regardless of experience level, to join in and have a great time with us!” You will want to check their Facebook Events page for exact details for each week, but the group regularly meets on the second level of CityWalk at the Red Coconut Club.
The group also has a Facebook page for new runners and expert exercisers. Here everyone can virtually meetup to discuss future events, ask about the sport and get prepped for the weekly offering.
For those on vacation, locals or anyone with the itch to run, this could be a great way to meet others and be in a community based on running. Do you have a favorite spot to run or walk at the theme parks?
If you need a kick before your morning run or theme park visit, Disney’s Animal Kingdom is now offering Avatar themed Cold Brews. Served in single portions, or as a flight, these flavored drinks have the taste you want and the caffeine you need.
