The 2008 “Twilight” film is almost as famous for its cringey, meme-able moments as it is for throwing vampires into the teen romance spotlight. “Fogville: A Sparkly Vampire Parody Musical,” at this year’s Orlando Fringe, takes this world of vampires, werewolves and teen angst and emphasizes the memorable moments with melodies. On stage for a limited time, this parody had audiences cheering as each iconic character took the spotlight.
The Orlando Fringe has entered its 35th year of being weird. “Since 1992, Orlando Fringe has provided a space and opportunity for artists to emerge and showcase their talents and craft,” shares this team of artists, board members, administrators and volunteers. The Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival is the longest running Fringe offering in the United States of America.
Fogville: A Sparkly Vampire Parody Musical
Fogville mostly follows the first “Twilight,” but adds in references and jokes from numerous moments throughout the film franchise. Where it works best is in the instantly recognizable character traits. Kristen Lee Vire (Stella Moonswan), parodying Bella Swan, provides the lost-in-thought lip bite, the awkward shuffle and the dangerously lustful desires one would need to be invited into a vampire family. Watching Vire climb and slide onto a fold out table, practically begging to be killed by a vampire while also singing along to a solo dance number about her awkwardness in a new school was the moment Twilight fans dream of. The outfit choices from the Twilight franchise made for special reveals on stage as each of the main characters had their time to shine and shimmer.
The musical aspect is where it all comes together, with original music and lyrics written by Bianca Matheson, arranged, recorded and produced by Beartonic Productions and Temy Tourpe. Taking an already exaggerated look at the dark, brooding world of the Edgar Sullen (parody of Edward Cullen), the musical moments placed it over the top. During my viewing on opening night, the crowd couldn’t get enough. Song after song, this production is more than a few actors, it implements choreographed dances, solo and choir moments, comedic fight scenes and even a tiny little tricycle.
While you could enjoy the performance without seeing the Twilight series, I would highly recommend going into this show having seen at least the first film. The jokes, references and mannerisms all directly relate to the films and while the songs are original they do need some context to be fully enjoyed. Fogville: A Sparkly Vampire Parody Musical is rated for ages 13 and up, there are mild moments of violence, some sexual themes and a few expletives. Grab your tickets now, as the show is only here for a limited time.
