Stowaway, a new aviation website, lets users virtually board an airplane or satellite with aerial imagery, audio and live data to accurately see the world from a different view. With constantly updated geo-location data from satellites and airplanes across the globe, Stowaway lets you look up and “join” the airplane travel directly above you, or anywhere else on Earth.
Stowaway.live describes itself as such, “The Service renders a live view of the sky above a location you choose, showing aircraft and satellites that are genuinely passing overhead, and allows you to follow one of them from a simulated vantage point. It is provided for interest and entertainment.”

Real data, real airplanes, real satellite imagery
For those who love aviation, want to know what their loved ones are seeing mid-flight or just need that airplane humming noise for an ASMR-style nap, Stowaway offers help for all. Using real-world data, this free-to-use site lets users add in their location or randomly pick a flight and see the “current views” with satellite imagery. Clouds and time-of-day are also rendered live, giving a fairly realistic sense of flying.
To add to this, there is an audio option, producing that distinct jet hum to enhance your viewing experience. While in the viewing mode, users can click on other airplanes or satellites to jump viewpoints. Each plane also offers multiple viewing angles and extra info about the type of aircraft, the trip and links to learn more. This ability to jump around and explore your city from the sky really helps put the airplane speed into perspective, something you rarely think about outside of actually being in a plane – and let’s be honest, too many travelers now close their window and don’t enjoy the spectacle that is flying.

A Reddit user stated they work at Orlando’s airport, MCO, and used the website to track and see a plane then watched in land in real time. The title photo of this article was a screenshot taken by myself, watching from my parents’ view as they flew out of the John F Kennedy Airport. I was able to set my location to their airport, find their plane taking off and “join them” as they began their trip.
Being a part of the trip or discovering a random flight
More and more airlines are getting Wi-fi options, making it easier to stay in touch with family and friends on their flights. But, not all planes have it and those that do can have some connection issues. Flight tracking apps, like Flighty, have made it easier to know arrival and gate changes, sometimes before the travel even knows themselves. Stowaway feels like an evolution of this, taking tracking to a visually entertaining level where you can be “on board” or find out exactly how you look from that jet high above you.
Maybe you just get on a plane to move place to place. But if you love aviation, cool websites or just trying out the random, new idea, Stowaway is a fun, free experience. Those who get more into the site can pay a monthly fee for better visuals and specific plane tracking. But, for what it is, this a well-rounded free site that isn’t hiding a necessary function behind a paywall.
