Big Thunder Mountain Railroad RE-OPENS May 3 at Magic Kingdom

The iconic “Wildest Ride in the Wilderness” attraction, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, re-opens at Magic Kingdom Park on May 3! This fan-favorite ride has received a lot of love since the closure in early 2025. Now, with weeks left until the return, Disney has showcased some first looks at the attraction and revealed that the height requirement is getting lowered.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has been an iconic part of Magic Kingdom Park since 1979. This classic “mountain” ride at the park closed in early 2025 for re-tracking, a good sign for longtime fans that this attraction isn’t going anywhere. During this nearly year-and-a-half long closure, the Walt Disney Imagineering team has been working to amplify this offering in more than one way.

New LOWER height requirement for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

One of the biggest bits of news for families is a lowered height requirement for the roller coaster down to 38 inches instead of 40. With new passenger vehicles and a re-worked ride monitoring system, the safety team felt confident that smaller riders could jump on.

Rainbow Cavern builds on Big Thunder backstory

As the ride begins, guests will head into the Rainbow Caverns and see an amplified story moment. The bats, stalactites and stalagmites have a fresh look. The Disney Parks Blog shares, “the trains rattle their way underground to spectacular natural caverns full of phosphorescent pools, shimmering and illuminating iridescent stalagmites (the ones on the floor) and stalactites (the ones on the ceiling). The Rainbow Caverns certainly are beautiful… but they ain’t as friendly as they first appear. In fact, that menacing rumble from deep within the mountain may be a sign that we ain’t welcome.”

Retracking and all-new passenger vehicles

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad closed down in early 2025, but Disney wasn’t wasting time on this project. Even while massive areas of construction surround Big Thunder Mountain Railroad for the upcoming Villains Land and Piston Peak National Park, Disney was working to re-build the track on this classic ride. While the attraction will keep its same track layout, this new steel can sustain the service life of the ride for decades to come. Bioreconstruct on X has captured updates on this ride refurbishment, showcasing the re-birth of this Disney Parks fans’ favorite.

Alongside the track is a set of new passenger vehicles. This should add more comfort to the ride without taking away the “wild” aspect. Walt Disney World Resort President, Jeff Vahle, shared a first look at these vehicles. The bench seat style seats remain, so don’t worry you should still be able to get that whipping, slide-in-you-seat feeling on the coaster.

Villains Land and Cars expansion at Piston Peak National Park

If you are as obsessed with theme park construction as I am, you may have also had this second thought. Not only is this classic ride re-opening, but this will also give us new views into the construction of Villains Land and Piston Peak National Park. These two new areas of Magic Kingdom Park are expected to open by the end of 2030. That gives us A LOT of time to watch the updates while rushing around on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

Using one ride to check on another isn’t new. For Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, bloggers loved to take a ride on Slinky Dog Dash in Toy Story Land. The Liberty Belle Riverboat (now closed) offered fantastic views of the Tiana’s Bayou Adventure construction. And now we will jump on the “Wildest Ride in the Wilderness” to see the next stage of Magic Kingdom be born.
